Building an Insulated Conservatory with Skylight

Introduction

Objective: To create a versatile, comfortable year-round conservatory featuring an insulated roof with skylight, tiled flooring, and plastered, painted walls.

Project Planning and Design

Initial Consultation:

During the initial consultation, mr pilkington expressed their desire for a multifunctional conservatory that could serve as a sunroom, dining area, and plant haven. Their primary requirements were:

- An insulated roof to ensure comfort throughout the year.

- Skylights for abundant natural light.

- Durable tiled flooring for easy maintenance.

- Smooth, plastered, and painted walls to connect aesthetically with the rest of their home.

Design Proposal:

The proposed design included:

- Structurally insulated panel (SIP) roofing with integrated skylights.

- High-quality ceramic tiles for the flooring.

- Walls finished with smooth plaster and painted in a neutral, light color palette to enhance the sense of space.

Approach

Construction Phase

Foundation and Framework:

1. Site Preparation:

- Prepared the site by excavating the existing lawn area to lay a robust concrete foundation, incorporating a proper drainage system to prevent water accumulation.

2. Framework Construction:

- Constructed a sturdy upvc frame to form the skeletal structure of the conservatory, ensuring it could support the walls and roof effectively.

Roof Installation:

1. **Insulated Roof Panels:**

- Selected SIPs for their exceptional insulation properties, which helped in maintaining a stable internal temperature while providing structural strength.

2. Skylight Installation:

- Installed skylights strategically to optimize natural light without compromising thermal insulation. Triple-glazed skylights were chosen to reduce heat loss and prevent condensation, ensuring thermal efficiency.

Flooring:

1. Preparation:

- Laid a leveled screed base to provide a flat surface for tile installation, ensuring durability and longevity.

2. Tile Installation:

- Chose porcelain tiles for their durability, ease of maintenance, and aesthetic appeal. The tiles were laid symmetrically to create a visually pleasing pattern, with grout lines sealed to prevent moisture ingress.

Walls:

1.Plastering:

- Applied smooth plaster to the internal walls, creating a seamless finish that could be easily painted.

2. Painting:

- Painted walls with a neutral light color to enhance the space’s bright and open feel. Paint used was of high quality, ensuring durability and easy cleaning.

Final Touches and Furnishing

Integration and Furnishing:

- Integrated electrical outlets and lighting systems seamlessly, including ambient and task lighting to complement the natural light from the skylights.

- Installed energy-efficient underfloor heating to ensure warmth during colder months.

- Furnished the space with comfortable, weather-resistant furniture and added greenery to align with the Thompsons’ vision of a plant-friendly environment.

Results

The project was completed within the stipulated timeframe and budget. Mr pilkington was thrilled with his new conservatory, which exceeded their expectations in terms of functionality and aesthetics. The insulated roof and skylights created a bright, airy space, while the tiled flooring and painted walls provided a polished, cohesive look. This versatile room now serves as a beloved part of the home, used for various activities throughout the year.
